Sue Street went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 4th, 2009. She was born May 28, 1941 in Elk City, OK. She was the only child of Wesley and Dorothy McCubbin, who named her Melba Sue. Sue grew up in Carter, OK, on her family's farm where her parents raised cattle and grew cotton and wheat.
After graduating from Carter High School as the Class of 1958 Valedictorian, she attended Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK. In 1959, she married Vern Austin Street and they moved to Wichita, KS. After moving to Stillwater, OK, in 1960, Sue worked as a secretary for an insurance office and later for the OSU Extension offices. In 1967 they moved to Bartlesville, OK, and in 1969 they welcomed their first daughter, Kerri Suzanne. Shortly after moving to Tulsa in 1973, they welcomed their second daughter, Sherry Lynn. In 1979 the family moved to Sapulpa, OK, where Sue joined the Nazarene Church.
While raising her girls Sue continued the college education she'd started years before. She loved science and math and wanted to be a secondary education teacher, but the Lord began stirring within her the desire to pursue a career in nursing. Her gift of teaching and serving others took her through 10 years of teaching prepared childbirth classes in her home, as well as Sunday School classes at church. She also served as the Sunday School Director for the Sapulpa Nazarene church. But her strongest desire was to bring others to the Lord. In 1987, Sue graduated from Bartlesville Wesleyan College with a Bachelors Degree in Christian Education. She continued to teach Sunday School and for a number of years also served on the Church Board. After a few years of working for the American Red Cross where she taught a variety of classes, God sent her back to school to finish her nursing degree. She graduated in December 1993 with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing.
Sue worked nine years for Hillcrest Medical Center as an oncology/neurology nurse, and she achieved national certification as a chemo/oncology nurse. For three more years she worked at Cancer Treatment Center in Tulsa, OK. The last 4-1/2 years of her career were spent working as a hospice nurse for SoJourn Care Hospice. Illness forced her into retirement in January 2009. Throughout her life and career, she touched hundreds of other lives through her compassion and ministry.
Sue is survived by daughters Kerri Manuel and Sherry Barrett; sons-in-law Steve Manuel and James Barrett; and grandchildren Tyler Barrett, Austin Manuel, Aaron Manuel, Nicole Barrett, Elizabeth Manuel, and Gabriel Barrett, all of Sapulpa. She is also survived by many cousins and extended family, and treasured friends who have become part of her family.
In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by a half-sister, Mrs. Naomi Lee McCubbin Taylor, whom she met in 1994.
