John Phillip Hanes, child of Charles Lewis and Sarah Phillips Hanes, was born March 1, 1843, and died March 29 1919. John Phillip was baptized August 26, 1843 at Hope Moravian Church. John Phillip's dad, Charles Lewis, died on December 26, 1843. His mother, Sarah Phillips Hanes, remarried in January 1946. She died in June of that year, leaving John Phillip and a brother, Henry Harrison, to be raised by Sarah's sister and her husband. John P. had two other siblings namely, Uriah and George Francis. Uriah was born on December 25, 1836, and died December 29, 1843 (3 days following his Dad's death). Sibling, George Francis was born Sep 23, 1838 and died Jan 19, 1844 (less than a month after his Dad died and 21 days after his sibling, Uriah, died).

John served his State of North Carolina in the Civil War by enlisting on July 18, 1862, at the age of 19. He served in Company H, Regiment 5, N. C. Cavalry. He served until June 9 1865. After the war he married Hester Ann Young on October 14, 1866, and they raised a family of nine children.
