Joseph was born in Houston where he attended South Houston High School and
graduated with the Class of 1968.
A few months after graduating Joseph enlisted in the Marines 1 July 1968, at the Houston Recruiting Office.
Lt Bryon W McCartney, father of Joseph was a United States Air Force veteran. He died 14 March 1967, before his son graduated and enlisted in the Marines.
Joseph arrived in Vietnam 19 February 1969, where he was assigned to the 3rd Platoon, Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Joseph died of a gunshot wound to the body from small arms fire, when 3rd Platoon engaged enemy forces during an ambush, near the Da Krong River, 12 kilometers north northeast of Ban Laan, Laos, when the battalion was participating in Operation Dewey Canyon.
Joseph was single and served his country for 8 months and 2 days and was KIA #38,538.
PFC McCartney had been in Vietnam for only 13 days.
Joseph was 20 years, 3 months and 21 days old.
PFC McCartney was buried 14 March 1969 with military honors.
