James H. was born in Vermont on 18 September 1837; died of apoplexy at Crossville, Cumberland Co., Tennessee on 26 January 1900; was buried at Crossville Cemetery, Cumberland Co., Tennessee [His Obituary, Crossville Chronicle, Thurs., 31 Jan. 1900; Cumberland County Cemetery Records, p. 25].

Civil War Service

James H., enrolled at Forest City, Iowa on 21 December 1861 as a private in Company C, 12th Regiment, US Infantry, and was discharged on 19 April 1865. He was taken prisoner in December 1864. J.H. was a commander of the GAR, Post No. 55, Crossville, Tennessee [Crossville Newspapers, p. 79, 85]. He served in the Federal Army for four years, and saw service in the Second Battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Gettysburg, and served with Grant for forty days in the Wilderness. He was taken prisoner in the battle of Welden Railroad, and was imprisoned at Belle Isle, Libby, and Salsburg, North Carolina prisons [His Obituary].

Life After the War

James married Lucy C. STREETER. J.H., of Ellington, and Lucy, of East Waterloo, were married at Cedar Falls, Iowa on 1 January 1866 by Rev. L.B. FIFIELD, pastor of the Congregational Church [Civil War Invalid Pension Cert. No. 118867; Crossville Chronicle, 3 Mar. 1927]. From 1860 until 1887 J.H. and family resided at Ellington, Hancock Co., Iowa.

They accompanied some of their family to Crossville, Tennessee from Iowa in October 1888 [Crossville Newspapers, p. 55].

At least two children of J.H. and Lucy resided at Ellington, Hancock Co., Iowa [Crossville Newspapers, p. 180, 206].
