Anna Marie (Myers) Albert, 78, of Great Falls, died of cancer Monday, April 16, at a local hospice facility.
Traditional Native American services will begin with a wake at 3 p.m. today at the Northwest Center, 2201 Northwest Bypass, and a funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday there, followed by burial at Highland Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Croxford Funeral Home.
Anna was born Dec. 12, 1933, in a tent on Hill 57 in Great Falls during a bitter cold winter to parents John Edward Myers, Metis, mixed Chippewa, and Molly (Gopher) Myers, full-blooded Chippewa; her paternal grandparents, Henry Myers, German, and Mary (Deserly) Myers, Turtle Mountain, Metis, Chippewa French; maternal grandparents Jim "Loud Thunder" Gopher and Mary Chippewa Gopher, both full blooded Chippewa. Grandma Mary was the paternal niece of Chief Rocky Boy, a Chippewa, founder and patriarch of the Rocky Boy Reservation. She also was a descendent of the Little Shell Tribe. Anna's Indian name, "Ka-Pi-Ah-Se-Es-Qua," descending woman, was given to her by grandfather Jim "Loud Thunder" Gopher of Hill 57, Great Falls, during her infant years.
Anna, alone, raised, cared for and loved all of her children, grandchildren and all of her relatives. They meant the world to her. Anna touched many lives; she never turned away anyone in their time of need, and was always there to lend a hand of support when needed. Anna was a strong supporter for James Parker-Shield and the Little Shell Tribe.
Anna enjoyed sharing her native Indian culture, such as being a true believer in the Sun Dance Ceremony, participating in the sweat lodge, and listening and round dancing to native Indian music with family members and friends. Anna also enjoyed reading her Bible, watching western movies, butterflies, playing bingo and reminiscing about life on Hill 57. Above all, the one thing she would like to be remembered for was her love and devotion to Jesus. Anna is loved and will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. What a remarkable and wonderful lady!
Anna is survived by her nine children, sons Michael J. Albert, Larry D. (Joann) Albert and Edmond (Sonja) Albert, all of Great Falls, John P. (Jamie) Albert Sr. of Browning, and Ethan T. (Terri) Albert of Greenville, Ind.; daughters Elaine Albert of Phoenix, Ramona Albert-Hawley of Lead, S.D., Linda M. (Randall) Parker of Rocky Boy, and Karen T. (Roger) Watkins of Lorain, Ohio; sisters Aline Pitzer of Salt Lake City, Darlene Ortiz of Placentia, Calif., Ruthie Reyes of San Antonio, Peggy Myers of Great Falls, and Yvonne Devera of Fallon, Nev.; and brother Lawrence (Janice) Myers of Rocky Boy.
Besides raising her children, she also raised four grandchildren, Neal T. Albert and John P. Albert Jr., both of Great Falls, Lisa M. Henderson of Rocky Boy, and Rebecca Burrows of Lead. Anna was very close to, and had a very special place in her heart for, her nieces, Glenda (John) Winterrowd of Great Falls, and Jackie (Chance) Houle and Leonora (Emery) Myers, both of Rocky Boy. She always thought of them as daughters, and she also held dear to her heart her nephews, Gary Pitzer of Great Falls, and Clyde Brown of Rocky Boy. She also is survived by 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and an adopted grandson, Luke Walawander, who were all in her thoughts and prayers daily.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; sister Wilma Myers Stanley; sons Neal A. Albert and James Albert; and grandsons Ryle Myers, Jonathan Mullinex and Michael D. Sandford Jr.
Kenneth G. Gopher, Sun Dance leader, will conduct the Native American services.
"My true belief the Father, the Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. May the Lord forgive me for all my trespasses, Amen. The Lord is my Sheppard. Amen." Psalm 23.
