Colonel of the 51st North Carolina Troops under General Thomas L. Clingman during the late War Between the States. Commanded the regiment during the grand assault of Battery Wagner on Morris Island, SC on July 18, 1863 against the famous charge of the 54th Mass. led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. He suffered from Melancholy following the war.
