Dec. 30, 1910-May 1, 2004 BURBANK, Wash. -- Delbert Melvin Rees, 93, of Burbank, Wash., a former Stanfield and Echo resident, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Blaine, Wash., following a short illness.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Jerns-McKinney Funeral Chapel in Blaine, Wash., with a social gathering to follow at the Blaine Senior Center. A family graveside service will be held later at Echo.

A twin, Mr. Rees was born Dec. 30, 1910, in Ohio, to Roscoe and Sarah Roara Rees. He spent his youth in Ohio on a farm with seven brothers.

He attended a tech school for welding, then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and relocated to Salmon, Idaho, where he barbered. He shared stories about those days, giving hundreds or maybe thousands of haircuts for the enlisted men for ten cents a head and two bits for the officers. Mr. Rees was also a golden glove boxer champ.

He later moved to Butte, Mont., where he worked the mines. There he met his first wife Anna Ellen Linville who preceded him in death. They had three children. The family moved to Bremerton, Wash., under a special contract. Mr. Rees taught welding to "Rosie the Riveters" and also welded the top flagpole on the "Mighty Moe." He was rewarded with a bonus for a job well done. He then moved his family to Stanfield, where they bought a farm. There he built houses and worked as a welder on several of the Columbia River dams. Several years later the family moved to Echo, where the children graduated from Echo High School. He retired in the early 1970's and made his home at Burbank, Wash., with his second wife, Helen Tolan, and then his third wife, both deceased.

He spent his last few years with his daughter, Ellen and her family, at Birch Bay, Wash.

His hobbies included baseball, fishing and playing his harmonica at family gatherings. He also enjoyed spending time with his best friend, "Blackie" (his dog).

Survivors include his children, Henry Melvin Rees, Ellen Marie Bonebrake and Ethel Mae "Cookie" Carrothers, one brother, Bill Rees in Ohio, nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great- granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blaine Senior Center.

Arrangements by Jerns-McKinney Funeral Chapel, Blaine, Wash.
