Archie V. Downing, 96, of Raymond NH, died January 1, 2007, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood NH after a long illness. He was born November 3, 1910, in Raymond NH, son of the late Ezra P. and Velma (Smith) Downing. Archie was a lifelong resident of Raymond. He came from a family of eight children and was predeceased by all his siblings. Archie worked for 30+ years as a welder and flames technician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; formerly he worked in several shoe factories including Burke's Shoe Shop in Raymond NH and Kulula's in Haverhill MA. Mr. Downing was a longtime volunteer Raymond firefighter. He was a charter member of the Raymond Sportsman Club and was formerly a Grand Chancelor of the Knights of Epitheus based out of West Epping NH and formerly of Derry NH. In his spare time, Archie enjoyed traveling with his family.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 73 years, Evelyn (Jones) Downing, in 2003, and sons Philip Downing in 1999 and James Downing in 2006.
Mr. Downing is survived by his daughters Vivian McGall of Auburn NH, Lorraine Bellemore of Derry NH, Gail Parenteau of Barrington NH, and Claire and husband Albert McIntosh and Paula and husband Roger Landry of Raymond NH; sons Stuart and wife Shirley Downing of Raymond NH, William and wife Beth Downing of Piedmont SC, and Joseph Downing of Raymond NH; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
