Herbert was born March 9, 1923, to John and Mattie (Jones) McCracken in Quinlan, Texas. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Herbert was assigned to the Pacific Fleet where he was a Navigator in a Patrol Bombing Squadron. Herbert was Honorably Discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant (jg).
He attended the University of Texas, Texas Military College and he received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Methodist University. Herbert married Barbara Brooke Gates on September 12, 1953, in Houston, Texas. He was a self employed Registered Professional Engineer and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers; he recently was recognized and received their 50 Year Award. He was a member of the North Texas Oil and Gas Association, the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Herbert was also a member of Floral Heights United Methodist Church.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Barbara McCracken; five daughters, Mary Brooke Kimbell and husband David, Jr.,Susan Regina "Susie" Gentry and husband Fred, Cary Crehan Likins and husband Randy, Catherine "Ann" Reed and husband Scott, and Cissy Leming and husband Paul, Jr., all of Wichita Falls; fifteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
