Charles was the son of Isaac and Hannah (Shaffer) Darling. He married Lutitia Stull on 23 Oct 1856 in Coles County, Illinois. He served in the Civil War.

Toledo, Ill., Jan. 26. – Charles Darling died at the home of his son-in-law, Ezra Stewart, in this city on Thursday morning, aged about 75 years. He had been ill only a few days with pneumonia. He leaves surviving him the following children: Mrs. J. W. Baichley, Mrs. J. W. Phelps, Mrs. Erza Stewart and Wiley Darling of this place, and Mrs. William Bobp of Mattoon. Interment was made in the Toledo cemetery. The funeral was under the auspices of the Toledo Masonic lodge.
