Mrs. Mary Rhoads Dead.

The remains of Mrs. Mary Rhoads, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Collins, in Topeka, last Friday, Dec. 21, 1928, were brought to this place Saturday afternoon and laid to rest in the Hartford cemetery by the side of her husband. Short funeral services were held at the grave conducted by Rev. E. A. Hughes, pastor of the Methodist church.
Mary Ann East was born August 1, 1827, in Lynchburg, Va. Was married to Issac Rhoads in 1844. To this union eight children were born, five of whom survive, as follows, S. F. Rhoads, of Pasadena, Calif., A. C. Rhoads, of Bakersfield, Calif., Fred Rhoads, of Hartford, Kans; Mrs. C. C. Campbell of Lebo, Kans., and Mrs. J. E. Collins, of Topeka, Kans. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.
With her husband she came to Western Kansas in 1880, and to Hartford in 1886, where they reamined until Mr. Rhoads' death in 1896. After that time she resided with her son, Fred Rhoads, until four years ago, when she went to Topeka to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Collins.
During her girlhood Mrs. Rhoads was a member of the Quaker church. She lived a long and useful life and lacked but a few years of rounding out a century. She was aged 96 years, 4 months and 20 days.
