Stella Mae Coker was born 15 September 1922 in Tribby, Scott, Arkansas, USA. She was 4th of the five children born to Henry Clay Coker (1881-1951) and Sarah Cora Vianer Phillips Coker (1884-1957). She had three older brothers; John William Hartsel Coker (1906-1965), Ellie Elwood Coker (1908-1993) and Stephen Charles Coker (1919-) and a younger sister, Velma Irene [Coker] Tackett (1924-1994). She married Walter Lawrence Newell on 23 January 1940 in Scott County, Arkansas. They became the parents of four daughter; Nadine Newell, Nina Newell, Ilene Newell and Kay Newell. Stella and Lawrence made their home in Eureka, California. She and Walter later divorced and Stella married Dewey Coontz. It was not long before she found herself in an abusive situation so she divorced him in October of 1966 in Humboldt, California. A few years later she married Lloyd Francis Kitchens on 1 May 1970 in Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada. Stella was a talented seamstress and could sew almost anything. She made her living doing upholstery. After Lloyd passed away Stella went to live by her daughter Kay in Oregon. Stella passed away 28 July 2001 in Eugene, Lane, Oregon. As per her wishes, her remains were cremated and taken back to California to be placed in a vault next to her husband Lloyd's ashes.
