Oscar "Buster" Van Asperen, 92, of Avon


Buster died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner. Funeral services are 2 PM, Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon. Burial is in Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation is Friday from 2 PM until 6 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon.


Oscar "Buster" Van Asperen was born March 15, 1917 to Oscar and Sara (Lako) Van Asperen at rural Springfield, SD. He died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner, SD.


Buster attended grade school at Hitt Country School near Perkins, SD and moved to Charles Mix County in 1932. He was a farmer for 55 years near Dante, SD. He worked at the Dante, Wagner and Avon Livestock Markets for many years as a weigh master. He retired from farming in 1987 and moved to Avon in 1989.


Buster was married to Magdalene Berndt on June 26, 1941 at Danzig Baptist Church of rural Avon.


He was baptized at the Kingsburg Congregational Church and was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Avon since 1935. He served as Sunday school superintendent two years and as an elder for over 50 years. Buster was on the Meadowview Manor board for many years and a Bon Homme County volunteer driver for 15 years. He belonged to the Bon Homme Masonic Lodge 101 for more than 60 years.


Buster is survived by his son, Curtis and Marilee Van Asperen of Custer and a daughter, Carol Lynn and Bill Lingemann of Ethan, four grandchildren, two great granddaughters, a great grandson, brother-in-law, Donald and Ethel Berndt, of Canby, MN and a sister-in-law, Helen Berndt of Avon, SD.


Buster was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalene on May 25, 2009, parents, three brothers: Andrew, Samuel, and Abe and a sister, Sarah Raabe.
