Whether because of a learning disability or by choice grandfather Walter wouldn't go to school and therefore he was illiterate. He did however manage to barely learn to write his own name, as seen in the photographed documents. Because others had to write things out for him and/or because he spoke in an unclear way, he was misunderstood. On his 1917 WWI Reg. he said that he was born at Barren Creek. "Barn Creek" is what was heard. On his 1943 Delayed Birth Cert. he said that he was born at Sandlick. "Sandlake" is what was heard. Being unable to read, he was therefore unable to correct these mistakes. He was born in the area were the Barren Creek and Sandlick Creek converge know as the community of Sandlick in Claiborne Co., TN.

Walter McCrary and Eliza Etta Feltner were married 2 May 1915 in Lodiburg, Breckinridge Co., KY. by Rev. I. C. Argabright in the home of Mrs. W. B. Argabright (Minnie Mae Feltner) on Sunday at 4 pm.

Over the years he had been a farmer, a mechanic, a coal miner, a laborer at a pottery company and a laborer for a paper mill.
