MORTON - Albert "Al" Boerckel, 89, of Morton passed away at 6:05 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at the Skilled Nursing Center of Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

He was born June 3, 1922, in Peoria to Albert Frederick and Lucile Margaret (Carey) Boerckel. He married Barbara Parmenter of Chillicothe on July 25, 1981, in Washington. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Sheryl (Dean) Schuessler of Channahon, Ill., Michael Boerckel of Taos, N.M., Becky (Randy) Stuber of Tremont and Steven (Deana) Boerckel of Sedalia, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Lael Boerckel of Peoria; grandchildren Jill (Marc) Wright, Brian (Shay) Schuessler, Jolynne (Jacob) Meseck, Jason (Melanie) Stuber and Jeana (Scott); stepgrandchildren twins Travis and Jacob Kiesling and Jennifer Kiesling; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Survivors also include devoted and dearly loved extended family and friends.

Al was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Quinn Wright; his parents; one sister, Beverly Hall; one brother, Bob Boerckel; his stepmother, Grace Boerckel; and one stepsister, Roberta Prussner.

He was active in scouting and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout, serving in the Creve Coeur Council of Peoria and later the Illowa Council of Davenport, Iowa.

Al graduated from Peoria Central High School and obtained his bachelor's degree from Bradley University and his master's degree from Indiana University.

He joined the armed services, enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. He attended Air Force training in Miami, Fla., and was assigned for four years to the Air Transport Command in the African, European and Middle Eastern theaters. He was assigned to the 9th Air Force and served in the chief pilots section, obtaining the rank of captain.

Al retired in 1988 from Caterpillar Inc. after 48 years of service. During his tenure at Caterpillar, he worked in East Peoria; Sagamihara, Japan; Mount Joy of Davenport, Iowa; at the corporate offices in Peoria; the basic engine plant at Mossville; and the Morton parts distribution center.

He was active with the parent-teacher organizations of Bettendorf, Iowa, and the Bi-State Planning Commission of Iowa and Illinois.

He was a member of the American Quality Control Society of Peoria and the University of Illinois; Rotary of Bettendorf, Iowa, where he served as president and was a Paul Harris Fellow; the Manufacturing and Tool Engineers; the Metal Society; and the American Foundry Society. He also did some teaching at Bradley University and the University of Illinois for the American Society for Quality Control.

Al had been active with the Peoria Central, Peoria Municipal and the Caterpillar bands.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Edwards and a proud member of Bethany's Dust to Glory ABC.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Bethany Baptist Church in Edwards, with Dr. Rich Boerckel, his nephew, officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, at Rock Island Memorial Park in Rock Island, Ill.

Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, 7422 N. Heinz Lane, Edwards, IL 61528.
