William Prettyman "Pert" Marvel, the son of James and Mariah Marvel, was born in Waynesville, Illinois on Nov. 25, 1851. In 1861 when his older brother,Thompson Marvel was 13, and William Prettyman was 10, they took charge of the farm as their father had met with an accident in which he was struck with a buggy tongue in the back which caused him to be an invalid for the rest of his life. He married Sarah Catherine Darnell on Nov. 6, 1873. In 1882, his mother and several of his brothers and a younger sister moved to Hamilton County with the opportunity to acquire more farm land. "Pert" Marvel followed them a few years later, living in Hamilton Precinct east of Aurora. During the drought and Depression years of the 1930's he moved to San Diego California. He died July 25, 1943 and is buried in the Aurora cemetery (sic) along with his wife Sarah and his youngest son, Guy. Two other sons, John W. and Vermil Marvel, are also buried in the Aurora Cemetery.
