Ben was born and raised in New Orleans Irish Channel and was a resident of Metairie and parishioner of St. Louis King of France Church for nearly 50 years.
He graduated from St. Aloysius High School, served in the U.S Navy, was a veteran of WWII (Pacific Theater); his career included playing professional baseball, owning and operating American Sporting Goods and Hardware in Lakeview and managing commercial property in downtown New Orleans. He was a member of St. Dominic's Knights of Columbus Council 3729, American Legion Post 0268 and VFW Post 6640. Ben was the Chairman of the American Legion First District Baseball Program for 30 years and served as State Baseball Director 10 years; he was also elected to the New Orleans Diamond Club Hall of Fame and the Knights of Columbus Softball Hall of Fame.
He was the husband of the late Rosemary Curry Abadie and is survived by his seven children: Ben III, Jack (Judy), Tommy (Judy), Elizabeth Abadie McMahon (David), Michael (Denise), Stephen (Greta) and David (Sharon), as well as 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was the son of the late Bernard E. "Ben" Abadie, Sr. and Hilda Johnson Abadie, and brother of Audrey Abadie Brechtel, William C. Abadie and the late John Abadie and Charles W. Abadie.
Visitation will be held Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. from
9:00 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 12, 2012, followed by a funeral mass at 12:30 p.m. at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church, 1609 Carrollton Ave. Metairie, La . Burial immediately following at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, masses or donations to the Alzheimer's Association preferred.
