Alva John Powell, 86, of Idaho Falls, formerly of Coffeyville, KS, died November 8, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born September 8, 1916, in Iola, Kansas, to Thomas Powell and Jemima Bauman. He attended public schools in Iola and graduated from University of Kansas in 1939. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Lawrence Journal World in the news department. In March of 1942, he joined the Army Air Force, where he served in the Operations and Intelligence Division. He was discharged in December, 1945, and returned to the news department for the Coffeyville Daily Journal. He married Norroena Wood on July 18, 1943. She died December 20, 2001. In 1948 he began a career in real estate and the Powell Realty Company was formed. He retired in October, 1994. He has served as President of the Coffeyville Board of Realtors, President of the Kansas Association of Realtors, and President of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce. In 1956 he was appointed to the Educational Speaking Staff of the National Association of Realtors and served on the Board of Directors for three years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Coffeyville, where he served as Trustee and Deacon. He was also a 50-year member of the American Legion.

He was survived by his daughter and grandson [names deleted]. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Norroena, and brother Elmer. Graveside services were held Monday, November 11, 2002, at Fielding Memorial Park, with Rev Dr. Dennis Falasco of Idaho Falls First Presbyterian Church officiating.
