"All census records list him as being born in 1828/1829, and he is shown on the 1850 census to be older than his brother James, who was born in December 1829. (In 1850, he is listed as age 21, while James is listed at age 20). Furthermore, his family, which was living in North Carolina in the 1820's, had relocated to Tennessee between 1829 and 1833, because his brother Charles was born there that year. However Joseph was born in North Carolina like all the older pre-1830 siblings. They were still in Tennessee in 1835 when the next child (Mary Ann) was born."
