Joseph Wheeler was born in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England about 1610. He was the son of Thomas Wheeler and Rebecca Sayre. He was baptised on February 18, 1610 at Cranfield. Joseph married a woman named Elizabeth, probably in England, and came to Concord, Massachusetts Colony, before 1638. Joiseph was made a freeman on May13, 1640 at Concord. His wife, Elizabeth, had two children in Concord. Elizabeth and both children had died by 1642.

About that time, Joseph married Sarah Goldstone Merriam, the widow of Joseph Merriam, whio had at least six young children. Joseph and Sarah had two children. Sarah died in 1671 and Joseph married Francis Watson Wheeler, the widow of Isaac Wheeler, no relation to Joseph. Joseph died after 1681 in Concord. He is most likely burried in the Old Hill Burying Ground.
