Waynesville, NC - Dennis Kent Hoerber, 71, passed away on July 23, 2011 following a short illness.

He was born August 25, 1939 in Rochester, MN. He moved with his family to West Palm Beach, FL, in his youth, and lived in Palm Beach Co. until 2003 when he and his wife retired and moved to Waynesville.

A 1957 graduate of Palm Beach High School, he received an A.A. degree from Palm Beach Junior College in 1959 and a B.S. Business Administration degree from Florida Atlantic University in 1971. A Florida Class A Registered Pool Contractor in 1975, he became a Florida Certified Commercial Pool Contractor four years later.

Dennis worked for 10 years with the Palm Beach County Engineers Office starting as a draftsman with promotions taking him to Administrative Assistant to the County Engineer. In 1969 he became Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Palm Beach and worked there until 1973 when he founded Gold Coast Pools, Inc. As C.E.O. he founded subsidiary companies and in 1985 merged his construction, manufacturing, maintenance and retail entities into The Wet World, Inc. He founded and became C.E.O. of Hoerber Pools, Spas & Waterfeatures, Inc. in 1995.

Between 1981–1990, he was appointed twice to 3-year terms on the Palm Beach County Construction Industry Licensing Board and was selected by the Palm Beach Co. Board of County Commissioners as Chairman of the Pool & Spa Codes Rewrite Committee. His professional associations included the Jim Shirey Chapter National Spa & Pool Institute where he served as an officer and Special Committee Chairman; and was inducted into their Hall of Fame; Home Builders & Contractors Association; United Pool & Spa Association serving on the Founding Steering Committee; and Public Pool Council, again serving on their Founding Steering Committee.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Bernie & Eva Hoerber; his wife, Kathleen; brother, David; and sister-in-law, Lana. Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Diana & Robert Dukes; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas & Susan Hoerber; two nephews, two nieces; three aunts; numerous cousins; special friends and neighbors.

Respecting his wishes, a private memorial service has been planned. Inurnment will be at the Memory Gardens and Columbarium of Grace Church in the Mountains, Waynesville, NC. He requested no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Kathleen F. Hoerber Memorial Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 256, Waynesville, NC 28786; or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Haywood County, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
