Asa's date of death is in doubt. My original source for the date is Gravestone Records of Kent County, 1925-1932, housed in the Grand Rapids, MI, public library and accessible online through Rootsweb. Originally published in 1931, it consists of a transcription of gravestone records compiled by the D.A.R. and other sources, and has been expanded beyond its original coverage. This material was republished in 1994 by the Western Michigan Genealogical Society as "Ada Township Cemeteries," available through Ancestry.com. The problem is that the 1870 US Federal Census for Ada, schedule 2 ("Persons who Died during the Year ending 1st Jun, 1870") shows Asa having died in July of 1869, not 1867. His shown age of 65 is consistent with his known birth in 1804. The cross-reference to the Schedule 1 census data correctly links him to his still-living family. Since the original headstone is gone, there seem to be two options: either the D.A.R. misread the 60-year-old stone when they made their transcription, mistaking a "9" for a "7," or my 3x great grandfather Asa wandered around Ada, MI, as a zombie for two years. I suspect the former - but have left the date unchanged in this memorial inasmuch as it's what the cemetery records show.
