James E. "Jim" Thompson, 64, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Southeast Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 7, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Rev. Jim Tate officiating. The eulogy will be given by Elder Jimmy Bedingfield. The family will receive friends from 9 until 11 Tuesday morning at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson was born February 1, 1948, in Huntsville, Alabama to the late Wilma Dean Thompson. He lived in Fitzgerald most of his life. Mr. Thompson was a retired Detective with the Ben Hill County Sheriff's Department and for the Fitzgerald Police Department. He served ten years in the United States Army. Mr. Thompson was a member of Memphis Baptist Church, the Faith Riders and the American Legion Post 99.

He is survived by his children, Johnny E. (Teresa) Thompson of Ellaville, Shawn (Henry) Knight of Leesburg, Michele (Tommy) Mercer of Sylvester and Joanna (Ron) Thompson-Smith of Mt. Vernon, WA; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Olean Davis and Brenda (Jimmy) Bedingfield all of Fitzgerald and Vera Peacock of Dothan, AL as well as several nieces and nephews
