-----

-----

Services will be here Monday and at Cadiz Sunday for two college students killed late Friday afternoon when their autos collided on the Canton Pike (KY 272).

Killed in the fiery crash William Hobart "Bart" Cayce, 18, of 2724 Clinton Circle, and Rise Carol Thompson, 20, Cadiz.

Cayce was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Granville Cayce Jr., owners of Cayce Mill Supply Co here. Miss Thompson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brent D. Thompson, Cadiz. Her father is president of Trigg County Farmers Bank.

Both victims were coming home for the weekend, Cayce from Murray State University and Miss Thompson from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.

State Trooper Jerry Pepper said the accident occurred about 4:30pm about six miles west of the city near Julien.

He said Cayce's car was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed and strayed into the path of the Thompson vehicle after topping a small rise in the road.

Deputy Coroner Alan Beard pronounced both victims dead at the scene. He said the Thompson woman died of a broken neck and other injuries and Cayce died of multiple massive injuries and burns. Beard set the time of death at 4:30pm for both.

Pepper said the Cayce vehicle apparently veered into the wrong lane and struck the Thompson car head-on, knocking it off the road and into a fence. Cayce's car flipped onto its top on the opposite of the road and burned.

Officials said Miss Thompson's body was removed from her car within minutes of the crash, but about two hours pased before the firs could be extinguished and Cayce's body recovered.

Pepper said he was aided at the scene by the Christian County Rrscue Squad, State Troopers Jim McRae and Phil Wallace, the Christian County Police and the West Side Volunteer Fire Department.

Services for young Cayce will be at 10am Monday at First Christian Church with the Revs. Robert Franz and Dr. Leonard Boynton officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

He was a student at Murray State University and a pledge for Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

A Hopkinsville native, he attended Hopkinsville High School and served as president of the Student Council his senior year, president of his class in 1975-76-77, and was co-captain of the football team and a member of the baseball team.

He was selected for Who's Who in American High Schools in 1976-77 and received the Leadership Award his senior year. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of First Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Thomas Breck, Robert M. and Granville L. Cayce III, and his grandparents, Mrs. Granville L. Cayce Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Hobart G. Watson, all of the city.

Visitation will begin at 11am Sunday at Hughart Funeral Home. The family asked that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Rotary Student Loan Fund.

Services for Miss Thompson will be at 3pm Sunday at Cadiz Baptist Church with the Revs. Drs. Bill Belva and Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be in East End Cemetery at Cadiz.

She was a junior at Vanderbilt University and a 1975 graduate of Trigg County High School. She was a member of Cadiz Baptist Church. She was born in Cadiz, March 7, 1957.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmothers, Mrs. Lucille Thompson, La Center, and Mrs. Zeecy Spencer, Cromwell, and a brother, John M. Thompson, of the home.

The family requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Cadiz Baptist Church. The body is at Goodwin Funeral Home.
