Thomas Luther "Buck" Cowart was the son of James Warren Cowart and Mary Manemma "Mollie" Beall. He was born on April 4, 1895, in Texas. Buck grew up and, when he was 22 or 23, fell in love with Lucia "Lucy Lee Sherwood whom he met when both of their parents lived in New Mexico.

After their marriage in 1918, Buck and Lucy lived in Madalena, Socorro County, New Mexico. While living there, the couple had three beautiful daughters--Maxine who was born in 1919 but lived only a year, Nadine who was born in 1921, and Bettye who was born in 1923.

When Nadine was two yars old and Bettye juist a month old, her 26-year-old mother Lucy died. Now a widower with two daughters ages 2 and one month, 27-year-old Thomas asked his parents for help in rearing his daughters. Nadine and Bettye were thus reared primarily by their grandparents. In the 1930 New Mexico Census, the two little girls were part of the household of their grandparents James and Molly Cowart.

Approximately six years after this wife Lucy's death, Buck Cowart married again. His second wife was Ray S. Kemper Cowart. Buck and Ray had three sons--Tom, George, and "Little Buck."

Buck died on March 24, 1967, in Socorro, Socorro County, New Mexico, at the age of 72. He was buried in a cemetery about two miles from Socorro. His wife Ray died eight years later and was buried beside him.

On his father's side, Buck was the grandson of James J. Cowart and Priscilla Wimberley, and he was the great-grandson of Zachariah W. Wimberley and Quinna Vaughn of Wake County, North Carolina.
