Joe T. Whitener, age 91, of Conover, was a son to the late Ted L. and Bertha Stephens Whitener. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy Stevenson Whitener; second wife, Joyce K. Sherrill Whitener; daughter, Sandra Whitener Phillips; three brothers, John L. Whitener, Richard M. Whitener, and William F. Whitener.
A member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Conover, he served on the Church Council, as Building Fund Treasurer, as Financial Secretary, and President of the Lutheran Church Men's Organization. Joe graduated from Hickory High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. He retired as a teacher from St. Stephens High School. Joe served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and fought in the Battle of Okinawa.
Interment in Conover City Cemetery with Military Rites.
