John Breuning grew up in Lebanon, Illinois and remained there through the early 1880's where he was a general laborer.

With the booming of Minnesota economy, he moved to Melrose and subsequently married Cora Mae Morehouse in September, 1888.

In 1901, the family relocated to DeSmet, South Dakota. In 1912, the family broke-up and returned to Minnesota, where the three younger children lived for a time with their maternal uncle, Fred Morehouse in Melrose.

John and Cora had five children:

John Edward Breuning (1889-1968)
Ethol May Breuning Bjerknes (1891-1991)
Clara Belle Breuning Carlson (1893-1980)
Walter Breuning (1896-2011)
Frank Everett Breuning (1905-1996)

Although John and Cora both died fairly young, one of their children, Walter, lived to the ripe old age of 114 and carried the title of "Oldest Man in the World" for almost two years.
