John is the son of Colonel John H. Broocks and Elizabeth Jerome Polk of San Augustine, County TX. Colonel Brooks is the son of General Travis G. Broocks and Elizabeth Ann Morris Broocks. Elizabeth Jerome Polk parents were, John Polk b: 25 OCT 1798 b: North Carolina, and Cynthia Springs Polk b: 25 FEB 1801 in Tennessee, buried in Leon county, TX. John married Laura his late brother, Ben C, Broocks wife. They were married Aug 26, 1906 in San Augustine,TX. They had one daughter together, named Elizabeth Jerome Broocks, b. about 1910. She married a man named Dalton.
Laura came into this marriage with her 3 children with Ben, in which were named Ben, Ara Francis and Eugenia Allen Broocks.

John H. Broocks, lived in Beaumont with his other brother, Moses Lycurgus (1864-1908). They established a legal firm known as Broocks & Broocks, based in Beaumont and San Augustine, which dealt mainly with real estate law. Significantly, they represented Pattillo Higgisn in 1901 in his suits against George W. Carroll and Anthony F. Lucas for the money he felt he was due from the discovery of Spindletop. In addition to their legal practice, Moses represented the Second District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1905-1907, and John was a principal owner of the Gulf and Interstate Railroad from Beaumont to Galveston, and a director in the Higgins Oil and Fuel Company. They also directed the Jefferson County Abstract Company, a real estate firm, and invested heavily in rice agriculture.

Broocks name came to command respect, and the families made many substantial contributions to the business and social life of San Augustine, and elsewhere.
