For many years his business, Copeland's Wood Yard (located on the Missouri River), sold cords of wood to passing steamers. He was also a partner in a saw and grist mill.
John died at Percival at the age of 77 years 3 months. He was buried at Rector Cemetery. Most of those buried at Rector were moved and reinterred at Grandview Cemetery.
