Son of John and Sabra Lawrence Harger, and grandson of George and Phebe Harger of Henry Co. Va. He was married to Lillian Linden (Lillie) Lancaster, who had five children with him, who were: Katherine, Maud, Emma, Walter Jr., and Nina. Only Katherine and Nina lived past early childhood. Lillie died ca. 1905, and Walter married Della Wood in 1907. He and Della never had children of their own. Walter had worked as a grocer with his store on Trade St. in Winston-Salem and as a drug salesman for a company out of Asheville, NC among other things. (He also came up with his own concoction called "Harger's Red Hot Drops".) Walter died of TB, leaving Della to mourn him for the rest of her life. She was over 100 years old, and still in love with him when she died herself at around 105 years of age. She never remarried. Della had wished to be buried with Walter, but it it looks like it didn't happen.

(Note: A document that was made up and notarized on Sept. 8, 1942 by Kate Harger Crews, states that Walter Lee Harger was born in 1867.)
