She and her siblings went by the maiden name Jasin, although it was actually Jasinski/Jasinsky.

Helen was presumed to have been born in Swampscott, Ma., I found a record that matched her birthdate and her parents names in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. It looks like she was born as Waleria Jasinski. (Valeria) Her parents may have had relatives in Chicago that made them travel there and then back to Massachusetts.

Her parents came to America around 1905. Her mother couldn't speak English but her father could.

Born of Russian/Austrian/Polish descent-her parents were John and Mary Buba Jasinski/ Jasinska/ Jasinsky. Helen's mother died when she was very young, supposedly of appendicitis, and her father, who was a saloon keeper in New Bedford, Ma., had no way to look after his children and work at the same time. They were put into St. Hedwig's Industrial School in Niles, Ill. Helen ran away from the school at the age of 14 saying that the sisters were cruel. She ended up being a nanny or governess for the children of a wealthy family, where she met her future husband Jack Crews, a NC native. They went to Brooklyn, NY for a time during World War II, and lived in an apartment on Montague Terrace overlooking the East River where the Statue of Liberty could be seen from their window. That was before an interstate was built over that area---the same area where the movie "The Sentinal" was filmed in the '70's. They moved to Greensboro, N.C. after the war, where they stayed until their deaths.

Below are some records that I've found from Ancestry in which her parents were named:

Janiera Jafanyski b. Oct. 6, 1906 in New Bedford, Ma.

Stanislaw W. Jasinska b. May 4, 1908 in New Bedford, Ma. to John Jasinska & Mary Buba--both born in Austria. John was listed as a mill operative at that time---probably at Wamsutta since it was close to their home.

Zofia Jasinska of 33 Delano St. in New Bedford b. Feb. 02, 1912 d. July 10, 1912 buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Waleria Jasinska b. March 14, 1914 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois to John Jasinska & Mary Buba. I believe this was actually Helen, as it is her birthdate.)

Adela Jasinski b. Nov. 11, 1916 in Cambridge, Ma. Lived at 230 Webster Ave. Father was a newspaperman.

Sisters Adele, Sally (married Earl M. Leven), and Irene. One brother, whose name I don't know died sometime during the World War II era. One brother, name unknown, was killed (supposedly stabbed) on a troop train during WWII.
