Son of John Wilkie (1811-unkn) and Elizabeth Campbell (1817-1857), both born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Married Elizabeth Drinkwater in Haldimand, Ontario, 19 Oct 1864. Nine children: John, Mary, Agnes, James Jr., Alexander, Margaret, George, Elizabeth, and Robert.

James worked at the post office in Selkirk, Ontario, before moving to Amberley, Ontario, in 1889. There, he operated his own general store for 21 years, selling it in 1920 when he was 79. The original store was torn down during road construction in 1956.
