According to his obituary, he was "well-known for the prominent role he played in civic affairs, was elected in Cavendish to serve in the House of Representatives in 1953, and after two years was elected to the State Senate from Windsor County, where he was known for his efforts to improve or rebuild the state prison in Windsor. He had a total of 20 years in Montpelier and was chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and chairman of the Senate Institutions Committee."
