"Ozzie" was the oldest son of Joseph Arthur LaFontaine and Sara Milliette LaFontaine of Champlain, NY.

The family were sailors for many generations. Ozzie is descended from several Carnigan Regiment Soldiers and Filles du Roi, the women sent by King Louis to colonize Canada.

Ozzie worked as a tugboat captain for Macallister Brothers for many years, primarily driving barges up and down the Champlain canal from New York City to the St. Lawrence.
