Mrs. Julia Bulkley Died Suddenly Last Wednesday

Ruptured Blood Vessel is Cause of Death. One of Old Settlers of County.

Mrs. Julia Bulkley, aged 73, wife of Columbus Bulkley, died rather suddenly on Wednesday night of last week at 10:30 o’clock at her home in Libertyville. A blood clot in the stomach, resulting from a ruptured blood vessel is given as the cause of death. The blood vessel burst Wednesday morning but despite all that could be done for he Mrs. Bulkley continued to grow worse. She was conscious up to a short time before death.

The deceased, Mrs. Julia Ward Bulkley, maiden name Boardman, long numbered among the early settlers in this community was born at Senica* Falls, New York State, Oct. 21, 1842, and passed away here at her home in Libertyville Wednesday evening, Aug. 30th, being 73 years, 10 months and 9 days of age at the time of her departure.

When the deceased was a child but four years of age, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Boardman, with all the members of their family left their New York state home at Senica Falls and settled in Libertyville township in the year 1846, where she attended the public schools, grew to womanhood, married and established her home and through all the years formed a great many friendships and acquaintances which have been beautiful and lasting even up to the hour of death.

She was united in marriage to Mr. C. C. Bulkley on the 9th day of December 1863, and into their home two sons were born, both of whom survive her departure. Those of the immediate family who are bowed down in deep sorrow because of he unexpected and altogether sudden departure from them in death are her bereaved husband and her sons, Ralph W. Bulkley of Libertyville and Arthur Bulkley of Waukegan. There are also living five grand-children and two great grand-children of the deceased. But in addition to the loved ones of her own immediate family, there are more distant relatives, neighbors and friends.

Through all the years of her long lifetime she found he chiefest joy in her home circle. There she ministered to her loved ones, and from there he influence for good went out into the community in which she lived, as she extended to others in their sickness and in their suffering and in their sorrow, the helping hand. She was loved and esteemed by all who knew her and now that she has gone, it is surely a tribute to her character and work in this community to hear so many speak from their hearts of her exemplary life. She also reached out a helping hand to the churches and the Ladies’ Aid societies of the same in this community and in her younger years when strength permitted, was active and faithful in church services.

She was one of the organizers of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Libertyville Cemetery Association in 1896 and has been one of the officers of the same for twenty years and was superintendent of the organization at the time of her death.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home, Rev. T. E. Ream preaching the funeral sermon. Mrs. Paul Harmon sang. The remains were laid at rest in Lakeside cemetery.
