John Henry Holden Sr., 75, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. The service will be at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday at Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, with burial at Southside Cemetery.

John Henry Holden Sr. was born April 29, 1930, in Donalsonville, Ga., to Cora Barber. John Holden grew up in Tallahassee, where he completed his secondary education at Lincoln High School and later entered the U.S. Army. He served honorably for 24 years with combat tours in Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the military in 1972, he was employed by the Florida State Police, where he served for 15 years, culminating in a second retirement in 1986. John received Christ at an early age and was a devoted Christian and a pillar in his community. He was a kind-hearted individual who extended a helping hand to anyone in need.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory: a loving and devoted wife, daughter, five sons, stepdaughter, three stepsons, two sisters, two brothers, 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

John Holden was preceded in death by his mother; a son, Gregory L. Holden; a brother, Mack D. Barber; and a sister, Emma Lee Barber.
