Funeral Services for Mr."Doc" Bennett, 91, of Pontotoc, Oklahoma will be held on Thursday, April 5th, 2012 at 2:00 p. m. in the Clark Funeral Chapel in Tishomingo, Oklahoma with Rev. Don Delaplain officiating, assisted by Rev. Roberto Escamilla. Interment will follow in the Colley Cemetery on Hwy 99/377, one mile north of Pontotoc, Oklahoma. Mr. Bennett passed away on March 30th, at his home. "Doc" was born on December 12th, 1920 in Hampshire, Tennessee to Horace Claybourn Bennett and Claudia Olive (Hudson) Bennett. After high school graduation, he attended and graduated from Murray State College in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. He then served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1945 receiving his Honorable Discharge. After his military service, "Doc" attended and graduated from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. He married Carol Delaplain on May 26th, 1946 in Ada. Years later, he received completed his Master's Degree at East Central. He was a Golden Gloves boxing champion in his younger days and into his senior years competed in the Senior Olympics from age 60-85, receiving many award from both activities. He was also an avid runner. "Doc" was a teacher, coach and rancher for many years. He lived in Pontotoc County from 1969 until the present. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill Bennett and Frank Bennett and three sisters, Cleo Huff, Hazel Williams and Vera Niemiec. "Doc" is survived by his wife Carol, of the home; his daughter, Cindy Stinchcomb and husband Roger of Fittstown, Oklahoma; two sons, Dan Bennett and wife Donneva and Larry Bennett and wife Zanda, all of Oolagah, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; his sister, Wynona Marie Phillips of Pasadena, Texas; other relatives and friends. Pallbearers for the service will be: Lance Bennett, Luke Bennett, Zachary Bennett, Josh Bennett, Roger Stinchcomb and Andreasen Matson. Honorary Bearers will be: Albert Snow, Joe Woodard, Charles Wyatt, Turk Barrett and Benny Bennett.

Bennett had a girls basketball coaching record of 516-165 and a boys record of 404-184. He was elected to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Association's Hall of Fame in 1979. A year later, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Boys Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a boys all-state coach in 1965 and a girls all-state coach in 1967.
After graduating from East Central University in 1947, he coached at Dundee, Savanna and Eufaula before achieving his greatest success at Oologah. In 1965, he led Oologah to a boys state basketball title, defeating a Binger team that included baseball hall-of-famer Johnny Bench in the championship game. During that school year, he coached the boys volleyball team to a state runner-up finish and his girls basketball team was undefeated in the regular season.
During the 1965-66 school year, his girls volleyball team won a state title and he guided Oologah's girls basketball team to the state semifinals. In 1967, he led the boys basketball team to the state semifinals.
After five years at Oologah, Bennett coached two seasons at Okemah.
Bennett, who had a 54-0 record as a high school boxer at Tishomingo, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had more than 100 career boxing wins in the Navy and only one loss.
