Born in Deerfield, Kan., Verne moved to Odessa, Texas, and then at age 10 to Sheridan.

Verne passed away peacefully March 21, 2012 at his home in Portland.

Verne was an avid bowler, having two 300 games to his name. He also loved fishing, especially for fall chinook, hunting, woodworking and helping with youth sports. Verne was a very talented welder working for over 20 years at Gunderson and later at FMC. Verne spent his early career working in the shipyards as well.

Verne was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alice Hayzlett; brother, Leroy; sister, Maxine; and his first wife of 42 years, Marge.

Verne is survived by wife, Cheri; children, Jeff (Pat), Rebecca, Tim (Ginny), Debbie; stepsons, Don (Kathy) and Kevin (Beatrice); grandchildren, Nicole, Jennifer, Andrea, Christopher, Aaron, Brian, Joe, Robert, Nicole, Emma, McKenzie, Kate, Peyton, Damon, Derek; and great-grandchildren, Devon and Nicolas. There will be a celebration of Verne's life at Jo's Saloon in Milwaukie, Saturday, April 7, 2012, 4-7 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Peake Funeral Chapel.
