Joseph D. Schmader, 69, of Sigel, died Sunday morning, April 1, 2012, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca following a long and courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Born Jan. 10, 1943, over top of Bill Lander's service station in Lucinda, he was the son of Jerome A. and Veronica M. Beers Schmader.

Joe served in the U.S. Army from June 1960 through May 1966.

He retired from Jeff Tech in Reynoldsville in 1999 following more than 30 years of service.

Known as Papa Joe to his grandchildren, he enjoyed spending summers at camp and at the ocean with his family. Joe was known to be witty and was often singing a tune. He enjoyed going on tour with his wife, Kathy, restoring MGAs, hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening and wine making.

Joe married the love of his life, Kathleen A. Gatesman, on Oct. 5, 1963, and she survives. Together they raised four children, Margaret, Melissa, Joseph and Jacob.

Surviving are his wife, his children, Marge (Fred) Clark of Brookville, Melissa (Joseph) Polito of Brookville, Joseph D. Schmader Jr. of Sigel, and Jacob (Patti Bricker) Schmader of Jeannette; and eight grandchildren, Catie, Caleb and Clare Clark, Megan, Joseph and Isabella Polito, Matthew and Emily Schmader; and Millie the Lab.

Also surviving are siblings Joan (Art) Schwabenbauer of Downingtown, Jim (Delores) Schmader of Lucinda, Jay (Alice) Schmader of Lucinda, Jan (Roy) Towner of Lucinda, Jill (Vince) Schmader of Fryburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Immaculate Conception Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Monty Sayers, pastor, presiding.

Interment will be held in the St. Joseph Church Cemetery in Lucinda.
