Born February 28, 1916 in Gillespie, PA, daughter of the late Thomas Martin and Elizabeth R. (Kovac) Povlish. She married Andrew Bircsak, who passed away in 1992. Surviving are her two daughters, Janice Arnold, of Martinsburg, PA and Andrea Leung, of Milwaukee, WI; sister Agnes Petroka, of Fayette City; three grandchildren and one great-grandson. Sylvia was a 1940 graduate of California State Teachers College. She was an elementary school teacher and taught at Union High School for many years, retiring in the late 1970s. She was also the former proprietor, along with her husband, of the Balkan Hotel in Braddock. She was a former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fayette City, and a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America for over 50 years, and Javor Singing Society.
