Ignatius was born in Screven County, Georgia, the son of Hezekiah and Alley Anderson.

He married Rebecca Sharber in Telfair County on May 10, 1837, and they had the following children: William F. Anderson; James Anderson; Alley Ann Anderson; Robert F. Anderson, married Georgiana Swain; Hezekiah K. Anderson, married Sarah Jane Statham; and Rebecca J. Anderson, married James Dykes.

During the war, Ignatius was a corporal with Co. A, 12 Regt Georgia Infantry. His name appeared on a list of POWs surrendered on 20 May 1865 at Tallahassee, Florida by Maj. Gen. Sam Jones, CSA, to Brig. Gen. EM McCook, and paroled at Thomasville, Georgia.
