Mrs. Elizabeth A. (Anderson) Smith, wife of Dr. William T. F. Smith of San Francisco, died in the latter city on Saturday, September 26, 1908, and the remains were shipped to this city for interment in the Tulare cemetery. Funeral services were held this afternoon. Mrs. Smith was born April 25, 1839 in West Union, Adams County, Ohio to James and Mary (Baird) Anderson. She married Dr. Smith on November 16, 1865 in Fairbury, Livingston County, Illinois shortly after he completed his service during the Civil war. They lived in McLean County, Illinois until they moved to Chicago, Illinois so her husband could attend Rush Medical College there. After his graduation in 1879 they returned to McLean County where he worked as a physician. When Dr. Smith accepted a position as physician for the Southern Pacific Railroad the family moved to Tulare. After the railroad's repair shop was closed, the family moved to Kern County where they homesteaded some land. In 1897 moved to San Francisco where they ran a boarding house of 20 rooms at 917 ½ Mission Street in the city for several years. After the 1906 earthquake they moved to Napa until they could return to their home on Sixteenth Street in San Francisco. Mrs. Smith died there of cancer. She was 69 year, 5 months and 1 day old.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived in Tulare about ten or twelve years ago and are well known to the older inhabitants of this city. Dr. Smith was the prime mover in the establishment of the present Methodist Church here, and was also a great worker in the cause after its establishment. They were among the first settlers of Tulare.
Mrs. Smith was an aunt of F. E., and J. M. Anderson of this city. Besides her husband she leaves four children, who are as follows: Mrs. Lois Kitchen of Famosa, Mrs. Mary L. Wheeler of Tulare, Ulysses S. Smith of Tulare and Will Smith of San Francisco. All the children and Dr. Smith are here and attended the funeral.
