Sheriff Ira Burnett of Van Zandt county, 48, was killed instantly at 12:15 Thursday when a V-8 ford sedan in which he was riding on the highway near Cobb Switch, was sideswiped by a gasoline truck. Cobb Switch is between Terrell and Wills Point.

Funeral services were held at 12:30 (noon) Friday at the First Baptist Church in Canton with burial following.

Sheriff Burnett was a well known Van Zandt county peace officer, having served as a deputy under former sheriff Pat Nixon, before being elected sheriff at the last election. He was a candidate for re-election at the time of his death. Prior to becoming a peace officer he was a successful farmer and stockman of the Martins Mill community. He had lived in Van Zandt county all of his life.

Mrs. B.J. Burnett of Athens, a sister of Mrs. B.M. Roberts, was the step-mother of the deceased, having reared him since the age of two years. Mrs. Burnett, Mrs. Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Kee drove to Canton Thursday morning after learning of the tragedy.

Sheriff Burnett is survived by his wife and five children, four sons and one daughter. All reside at Canton.
