Permelia Griffin was born in Creek Path, Guntersville, Alabama, to James W. Griffin and Nancy Melton. Her mother Nancy Melton was half Cherokee and half wife, the presumed daughter of John Melton and Acumo (also seen as Ocuma) who was a full blood Cherokee woman. Permelia and her husband were listed in the Old Settlers Roll in 1851 at Tahlequah, now Oklahoma but at that time part of the Indian Territory or Cherokee Nation-see attached document)

Both of Permelia's parents are buried at Martin-Reese cemetery.

She married Hercules Terrapin Martin (buried at Martin-Reese). **For more information see his gravesite.

They had the following known children:

2. Narcissa Evaline Martin b. 1850 d. 1907 who married John M. Smith.
