Mattie was in the first class to graduate from St. Frances Nursing School in Monroe, LA. She worked for many Doctors in the area and retired from nursing at Norris Booth Clinic. As a life long Christian, Mattie was a faithful member of the Farmerville Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a devoted wife and mother and her family meant everything to her.

Mattie never let her age stop her from doing what she wanted to do. At the age of 90, she was determined to climb Mt. Driskill and she did. She loved to travel and she loved genealogy. Mattie was a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th century and the DAR.

Mattie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Royce Bird; her parents, Mathew Clyde and Willie Mae Webb Albritton; her son in law, Jeff Elledge; and her grandson, Brad Elledge.

She is survived by her children, Royce B. Bird II and wife Doyline, Janice F. Elledge, and Rogan C. Bird and wife Terri; her grandchildren, Matt and Wife Krista, Michael and wife Patty, Catthy and husband Jeff, Eric and wife Lacey, Nathan and wife Victoria, and Laura and husband David; 16 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Matt Bird, Roy Bird, Michael Elledge, Rogan Bird, Eric Mathew Bird, and Nathan Joesph Bird.
