James Cron Passes Over the River
James Cron entered the great unknown last Saturday. Death was unexpected. The old gentleman long been afflicted with heart trouble and the past few weeks he failed rapidly. For forty years Mr. Cron has been a familiar figure in this township. He came here from Canada in 1868 and has lived here without interruption since. He was a native of Scotland, born May 7, 1833. When he was a mere lad his father emigrated to Canada, living there many years on a farm. He was married to Charlotte Heacock in 1855, whose tragic death on the Rock Island railroad crossing last summer will be remembered. Eight children were born to this couple, seven boys and one girl as follows: J. S. Cron M. D., formerly of Gladbrook, but now in New Mexico for his health; Wm. L. Cron, attorney at law, Cedar Rapids Belle M. Bacon, physician, Cedar Rapids; Edward F. Cron, died in early manhood; Barton W. Cron, of Carroll township; Harry J. Cron, of Perry , Allan K. Cron, at home, and Thomas F. and Magda, who died in infancy. Deceased left eighteen grandchildren. In I860 Mr. Cron rented his farm in Canada and came to the States—locating finally here in 1868, purchasing 120 acres, on which he has since lived. Many more acres were added to his possessions by tireless energy and economy. Mr. Cron was a man of strong convictions but, possessed a kind heart. The funeral was at the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Smith, burial at West Union,
