Bernie M. Cassell, 89, of the Red River West Grove Road, Arcanum, died at 12:37 on March 27, 2012 at his home.

He was born March 18, 1923 in Miami County Ohio. His parents were the late Howard S. and Mary E. (Wenger) Cassell.

Bernie graduated from Milton-Union High School, West Milton, in 1941. He worked for NCR from 1959-1974 and Delco Products 1974-1985. He retired in 1985.

He was very active in the Church of the Brethren. He grew up at Salem Church of the Brethren and accepted Christ in 1934. He became a lifetime Deacon in 1970 at Potsdam Church of the Brethren where he was active with the youth group and taught Sunday school to all ages for 50 years. Bernie, along with his family, was a caretaker of the church for many years.

He served as a 4-H adviser for 15 years and Cub master for 3 years. Bernie was a Monroe Township Trustee for 20 years (1978-1998). He was a past President of the Darke County Trustee Association. Bernie enjoyed farming and model toys. He loved old cars and trucks. He enjoyed playing his saxophone and was well known for his little stories, his one liners and his singing. Bernie loved animals, especially cats. Most of all he loved the Lord.

He was preceded in death by brothers Harley and Merlin Cassell.

Surviving are his wife, Alice (Ditmer) Cassell, whom he married on February 23, 1946 in Pitsburg, Ohio. ; his five children: Sue (Kerry) Price, Milford, IN; Brenda Shiverdecker, Arcanum; Rosemary (Tom) Harvey, Warren, IN; Roger (Carole) Cassell, South Haven, MI; Jeff (Margret) Cassell, Vandalia.

He has nine grandchildren: Kevin (Lori) Price; Kara (Mark) Messmore; Ryan (Holly) Shiverdecker; Adam Shiverdecker; Katelin (Tony) Herber; Heather Cassell; Brittany (Brian) Soderquist; Lauren Cassell; Kacie Cassell. Two step grandchildren, Dan Lawson and Zach Sheehy. There are eleven great-grandchildren.

Surviving sisters and brothers: Don Cassell, Evelyn Lois Mergler, Jesse Cassell, Norma Helstern, and sister-in-law Jane Cassell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, April 2 at the Potsdam Church of the Brethren, Potsdam Ohio. Pastor Robert W. Kurtz and Ben Polzin officiating.

Burial will follow at Mote Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. Kreitzer Funeral Home, Arcanum Ohio is in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends and family on Sunday April 1 from 3PM until 6PM at the Potsdam Church of the Brethren. It is the family's wishes for memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Darke County or Potsdam Church of the Brethren. The Pall bearers are Jesse Cassell, Roger Cassell, Jeff Cassell, Kevin Price, Ryan Shiverdecker, and Adam Shiverdecker.
