At the age of twenty-two, Leander enlisted at Moravia on August 9, 1862 to serve for three years. He was mustered in as a private in Company I of the 111th New York Infantry on August 20th. Less than a year later he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.
Leander was wounded twice during the war. The first time was at Gettysburg when he was wounded slightly by a piece of shell on July 2, 1863. The second wound, which put him out of the war, was at Petersburg when he received a sunshot to the left hand on June 16, 1864.
