MUNCIE--Aubrey M. Rogers, 93, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 27, 1918 in Fayetteville, West Virginia, where his parents, William and Lottie Rogers, owned and operated a general store and post office. He moved with them to Indiana and grew up on a farm near the village of Ridgeville in Randolph County. He graduated from Ridgeville High School and completed his freshman year at Manchester College and attended Indiana Business College in Muncie for two years. He was drafted into military service shortly thereafter, serving in the U.S. Army from June 21, 1941 to October 5, 1945. He was Sergeant Major of an infantry Battalion, 63rd Infantry Division, U.S. Seventh Army, in France, Belgium, and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal twice and the coveted Combat Infantryman Badge.
Ten days after being discharged from the Army, he was hired as a temporary was service postal clerk at the Muncie post office to help with the holiday rush. He made a career of the postal service, serving in various assignments as a clerk, rising through the management ranks and retiring as Acting Director of Administration of the Muncie Management Service Center, U.S. Postal Service.
After retiring, he pursued his many hobbies; fishing, caning chairs, repairing his cars and grooming Schnauzer dogs. He acquired old post office lobby fronts and constructed an antique post office in his basement, complete with lock boxes and general delivery windows. It is also a grocery store and his grandchildren named it "Rogers Corner General Store and Post Office."
He was a long-time member of the Muncie Noon Optimist Club, having served as President, Lt. Governor and Secretary. He was honored by being named Distinguished Optimist of his district in 1995 and Distinguished Humanitarian in 1999. He was a member of Riverside Avenue Baptist Church, along with his wife of 62 years, the late Evelyn Barlow Rogers.
He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Baney (husband-Gary), Indianapolis, Winifred Bowersox (husband-Dennis), North Andover, MA, and Pamela West (husband-John), Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Kristin Bridges (husband-Brian), Cherilyn Salvo (husband-Christopher), Andrew Bowersox (fiancee-Allison Lenner), Abigail Bowersox, Jeremy West (wife-Elizabeth), and Christopher West; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Connor, Olivia, Victoria, and Alexys.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Vista Evelyn Rogers.
Services will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Rev. Robert Burton officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Delaware County. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
