Johannes was born in Woyens, Duchy of Schleswig, German Empire (now Vojens, Denmark). He emigrated from Bremen in 1889, aboard the "Lahn" and was naturalized 23 Jan 1895, in the US District Court, Northern District of California, in San Francisco. He and Marie were married ca. 1897, presumably in San Francisco. He served as President of Hinz and Landt, a wholesale millinery in late 19th and early 20th century San Francisco (with offices in Paris, Los Angeles and New York.) Johannes died at Zerolo Clinic, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands (a Spanish archipelago located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa).
